Healthy Communities

Helping New Zealanders make healthy choices.

  • Healthy eating

As a responsible organisation, and as a major distributor and retailer of food, we believe that we have a part to play in encouraging New Zealanders to eat healthily and to balance their energy intake and output. Our aim is to encourage our customers to eat, in moderation, a variety of nutritious foods that will enhance health, and to also be physically active.

Our primary focus will be to ensure that our customers have the opportunity to learn about healthy eating, have access to nutritious foods that are affordable, and have sufficient product information to make well informed decisions about their food purchases. Our private label brand pams sponsors the Food for Thought community-based nutrition programme teaching 9-10-year-olds healthy eating and lifestyle habits.

We're introducing a "healthy-options" range of products under the pams brand, and are looking at opportunities to reformulate products to reduce salt, fat and sugar content where appropriate. Our sponsorships also support exercise such as Netball New Zealand, and we are working with the public health community to trial practical initiatives that seek to improve New Zealanders' diets. For example, we have participated in Manakau Counties District Health Board "Let's Beat Diabetes" programme and the Cancer Society's LiveSmart programme. We are working towards a target of having 25 per cent of checkouts in Foodstuffs' supermarkets being confectionery free.

  • Supply of restricted products, including alcohol

As a distributor and retailer of restricted products, at Foodstuffs all our member stores are required to meet all legal requirements relating to the supply of restricted products including beer, wine, cigarettes and tobacco.

All checkout operators, supervisory and management staff receive training to enable them to fulfil their legal obligations in regard to the sale of these products. Special emphasis is placed on compliance with age restrictions - the sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors is strictly prohibited.

Where practical, point of sale systems prompt the checkout operator to verify the age of the purchaser when a restricted product is scanned.

If there is any doubt about a customer's legal right to purchase alcohol or tobacco because of their age, checkout operators are required to request proof of age. If a customer is unable to provide satisfactory proof of age in such circumstances, the sale of the restricted product will be refused. We have clear signage such as the "Under 25: ID required" logo at checkouts, and this logo is also used in conjunction with all press and circular advertising of alcohol products.

Our stores are required to follow appropriate host-responsibility practices and the sale of alcohol to intoxicated persons is prohibited. A duty manager is on duty at all times stores are open for trading and all checkout staff and customers have recourse to this person.

Foodstuffs complies with all Advertising Standards Authority codes of practice.

  • Genetically modified foods

We operate by strict guidelines when it comes to any genetically modified foods offered for sale in Foodstuffs member stores, and all products must comply with Food Standard 1.5.2 of the Food Standards Code.

    Specifically:

    • No food containing a GM product is stocked unless it has been pre-approved by Food Standards Australia New Zealand for sale in New Zealand and Australian markets
    • All packaged foods sold from member stores must comply with labelling requirements indicating the presence of a GM food or ingredient.

In relation to our private label products*, we are committed to the use of ingredients sourced from non GE crops, and non GE feed ingredients for animal products. To ensure this, we seek confirmation from our suppliers that all ingredients used in the supply of private label products are sourced from non GE derived crops, and that non GE feed ingredients are used for animal products.

Where our suppliers are unable to give such assurances we find alternative sources of supply where practical.

    * This range comprises the following brands: pams, Budget, Classic Cola and Spree.
