Foodstuffs

Social Responsibility

Our fundamental role as an integrated retail organisation is to provide our communities with ready access to their everyday purchasing needs. And as a proudly 100% New Zealand owned and operated organisation, we are also dedicated to supporting local businesses and the New Zealand economy by selling NZ made products as much as possible.

  • Fair Trade

Each owner-operator has a solid understanding of the requirements of their customers and community, and the different stores' ranges reflect this, carrying different product lines according to local customer demand. As a result of this commitment to our customers we sell Fair Trade products across supermarkets and stores where possible, and where customer demand is high.

  • Buy Kiwi Made

As an iconic, 100% Kiwi owned and operated organisation, Foodstuffs supports the Buy Kiwi Made campaign. We are committed to working with New Zealand suppliers to provide our customers with quality home-grown products wherever possible.

  • Country of Origin

We adopted a policy on the provision of country of origin information for all single ingredient products in August 2007. This applies to fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood sold in PAK'nSAVE, New World, Write Price, and Shoprite supermarkets nationwide. Four Square stores are currently implementing the country of origin policy.

Under our policy stores will provide country of origin information for all single ingredient products, whether the food is fresh or frozen, in bulk or in consumer packages.

  • Palm Oil

Foodstuffs position on palm oil is that we want to provide customers with information to ensure they can make an informed choice.  To this end, Foodstuffs encourages all suppliers to voluntarily declare the use of Palm Oil in ingredient labelling.  We also encourage suppliers to source palm oil from a sustainable supply.

For private label products, we are currently moving to require suppliers to declare their use of Palm Oil. Changes in product labelling will be gradually implemented as labelling is updated or product supply changes, but will be fully implemented by 2015.  Further, our buyers will work with suppliers towards sustainable sourcing, whenever commercially viable.

Where our stores provide ingredient labelling on store-produced goods, such as bakery items, we will endeavour to declare the use of Palm Oil where it used as an ingredient. As labelling changes can be effected more quickly for store-produced goods we will work towards being compliant with this policy by the end of 2011.
