New World supermarkets in Auckland have joined forces with the
Student Volunteer Army to help clean up the streets of Christchurch
suburbs which have been crippled by the recent earthquake. New
World stores have committed to helping the disaster relief by
collecting wheelbarrows and shovels from the people of
Auckland.
Finding sufficient resources are proving to be one of the
biggest problems facing the city's clean-up and recovery. There are
not enough high quality wheelbarrows or shovels to go around the
volunteers. As a result, many of the thousands of students who turn
up to help are unable to begin the clean up process as the
resources just aren't available.
New World is appealing to Auckland residents who want to help by
donating wheelbarrows and shovels. However, we request that all
wheelbarrows and shovels are of commercial-grade quality. This is
very important as they will be used to remove the silt and
liquefaction which is very dense and heavy, meaning high quality
tools are needed to ensure volunteers are not put at risk.
The Student Volunteer Army and New World are asking that
wheelbarrows and shovels donated have the following:
Wheelbarrow
- A pneumatic tire
- A strong, deep carry tray (preferably polyethylene plastic or
metal)
- A strong, supportive frame
Shovel
- A metal blade
- A strong shaft (metal or hardwood)
People wishing to donate a wheelbarrow or shovel that match the
standards above can drop them off at one of the following Auckland
New World stores.
