All fresh pork products sold in Foodstuffs' stores come from New Zealand farms. The pigs reared for fresh pork products are not reared in stalls. These pigs are grown in groups in pens, or open ended barns.
Some Foodstuffs' stores also stock free range pork products. Foodstuffs adopted a policy on the provision of country of origin information for all single ingredient products in August 2007. Fresh pork is covered by this policy. For processed products such as bacon the provision of country of origin labeling is determined by the manufacturer's policy. If you have queries about a particular product please call the manufacturer directly on the number provided on the packaging. The New Zealand Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), is responsible for setting and enforcing animal welfare standards. Foodstuffs take such standards seriously and expect all suppliers to meet these requirements. Foodstuffs will take immediate action against any suppliers who are found to be in breach of the standards. We understand that the Animal Welfare Code for pigs will shortly be reviewed and we encourage the Government to take consumer views into consideration. In the meantime, should you wish to find out more about pork farming standards and animal welfare please visit the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries website http://www.maf.govt.nz/mafnet/ or call 04 894 0100
