New World Melody’s golden sweep Palmerston North bakery recognised in national competition

Palmerston North New World Melody’s was recognised in a huge seven out of twelve categories, and took home three Gold Distinction awards at the 2014 New Zealand Bakery of The Year competition in Auckland on Monday.

What’s more, the team placed third in the prestigious Bakery of the Year category, and received an additional two gold awards and two bronze awards for their creations.

Two of the team’s Gold Distinction awards, the highest possible placing in a category, were for their Ancient Grain Vienna and Sourdough loaves, which were designed specifically for Melody’s. The third Gold Distinction was for the team’s bread display which was displayed in a picnic theme and featured some very unique breads. The bakery’s two Gold awards were for their celebration cake and gingerbread house, and the two Bronze awards were given for their Gluten Free Chocolate Cake and Opera Gateaux.

New World Melody’s store manager Kelly Melody is thrilled with the result.

“The top three awards are normally won by specialist bakeries, our team put in a lot of effort and we’re ecstatic to have placed third.”

The bakery’s creations also won them the top award in the creative category and second overall in the bread category.

Melody’s New World’s celebration cake entry comprised of a four tier cake which was decorated with a Great Gatsby theme. The intricate designs included an icing gramophone top tier, as well and beading and feather accessories.

The bakery’s gingerbread house won points for its unique design. The theme this year was ‘Christmas’ so rather than the usual snow-topped house, Melody New World bakers created an iconic Kiwi combi-van, set in a New Zealand summer with surf boards, a deck chair and a picnic.

“We entered just a handful of categories in 2012 and received a few silvers that year, so this time we thought why not enter all categories,” said Kelly.

“We are grateful to be recognised as one of the top New Zealand bakeries and would love for our customers to come in and see some of our entries that are on display as well as all of our other fantastic products we have i on their next visit.”

The Bakery Industry Association of New Zealand held the competition at the Fine Food New Zealand Expo in Auckland on Monday, June 23.

The overall award was won by Hawke’s Bay’s Heaven’s Bakery, with Masterton’s Ten O’Clock Cookie Bakery Café coming second.
