New World Te Atatū takes shape

2 December 2025

Te Atatū’s new supermarket is taking shape as the build hits an important stage. The primary structure is now complete and work is about to begin on the roof, moving the project one step closer to opening day.

The $50 million project (including land value) will bring a full-service New World to the Peninsula, creating around 120 new roles and transforming the 583 Te Atatū Road site that Foodstuffs North Island bought in July 2023. The redevelopment includes a comprehensive refurbishment of the former building and expands the retail space to 1,725m², nearly 10% more than the old store.

The design includes six team member operated checkouts, 10 self-scan checkouts and 136 car parks. A covered drive-through Click & Collect area with six dedicated car parks is also being built, supported by a 185m² online staging area where orders will be assembled before being delivered to customers’ vehicles.

Lindsay Rowles, General Manager of Membership & Property at Foodstuffs North Island, said: “The build has really started to take shape over the past few months, with the concrete structures now up and the roof about to start going on. It’s looking great and it’s exciting to see it all coming together.

“We know people in Te Atatū have been looking forward to this supermarket for a long time, and we’re working flat out to get it ready for them. It’s going to be a great asset for this community – modern, convenient and lots of choice. It really is great to see it moving ahead so quickly.”

An Owner-Operator will be appointed in the first quarter of 2026, ahead of the store fit-out and commissioning stages. Around 80 new roles will be created once the store is ready to open.

Foodstuffs North Island’s investment in Te Atatū will deliver a modern supermarket designed for accessibility, convenience and a strong fresh food offer, supporting the daily needs of the 15,000 residents who call the Peninsula home.

The store is scheduled to open in the second half of 2026.
