Foodstuffs NZ has been working with Councils, recyclers and packaging suppliers developing a viable replacement for the old non-recyclable polystyrene foam tray since 2013.

From research at Visy's recycling plant in Auckland, through discussions with local authorities on what they wanted to pick up kerbside, to in-store trials and customer research, the project is regarded as the first in NZ to pull together all the players in the life cycle of packaging.

Auckland Council and Visy recycling both remarked that no retailer had ever engaged them on packaging design before. The project has been remarkable in its inclusiveness and innovative approach to solving the problem of final disposal from the very outset of the design.

Following successful trials in 2015 and the overwhelming support from our customers, the tray – designed and developed by Alto Packaging – was rolled out nationally to all 190 supermarkets in 2016.

The new tray is manufactured in Auckland and will save customers money as it is free to dispose of via kerbside recycling. It has enormous environmental benefits as it comprises 50% recycled plastic and is 100% recyclable for customers. The new tray will replace 80% of the previous tray volume and will avoid 80 million trays going to landfill in NZ.
