New World Victoria Park rebuild planning underway

Planning is now well underway for the rebuild of New World Victoria Park, following the completion of demolition in late September. The site now has a clear slab and a fully functional underground carpark, allowing design work to progress.

The aim is to reopen a store that reflects contemporary retail design while keeping the essence of the previous store, which was well regarded by people living and working in the area.

To support reopening sooner, the rebuild will largely retain the existing footprint, alongside a refreshed layout, operational improvements, and enhancements to the shopping experience. The project team is also working towards achieving a Green Star-accredited supermarket, reflecting a focus on sustainable building and store operations.

Demolition completed

The demolition of New World Victoria Park, which was badly damaged by fire on 17 June, was completed on 26 September. The site now has a clear slab and a fully usable underground carpark, allowing planning for the store’s rebuild to move ahead.

Specialist contractor Nikau Group, supported by Livingstone Building, carried out the demolition. Two mobile cranes, a 300-tonne unit and a 90-tonne unit, were used to lift and remove plant, equipment and structural elements.

With safety at the centre of the operation, demolition began at the Franklin Road boundary and progressed towards Victoria Street. Fire-affected materials were separated into manageable sections and transported offsite for recycling or crushing for reuse.

The project involved:

  • 95 truckloads of material removed
  • Nearly 30% of demolition material recycled
  • Nearly 5 tonnes of mixed glass recycled
  • Thousands of glass bottles emptied and recycled

Due to safety concerns, all groceries were disposed of, with containers and packaging recycled wherever possible.

The building’s underground carpark, substructure and foundations can all be retained for the new supermarket, which will help streamline the rebuild.

Further detail on timelines will be shared as the rebuild planning progresses.
