New World Point Chevalier opens early, giving locals more choice
Matthew Mullins, Owner Operator of New World Point Chevalier and the family cut the ribbon to open the new store.
Foodstuffs North Island has officially opened the doors to New World Point Chevalier, adding more shopping choice for locals and creating 120 new jobs in the Auckland suburb. Located at 1136 Great North Road, the store opened earlier than originally planned to provide a convenient shopping option for customers impacted by the fire at New World Victoria Park.
Built on the site of a former RSA and car dealership, the 2,752m² supermarket represents a $73 million investment by Foodstuffs North Island into the Point Chevalier community. It offers 105 car parks, six team member-checkouts and eight self-scan checkouts.
Locally owned and operated by Matthew and Nicole Mullins, who previously owned and operated New World Ōtaki, the store features a full fresh food offering, the latest equipment, and a layout designed for a smooth and convenient shopping experience.
Owner Operator Matthew Mullins says the team is ready to make a great first impression: “Point Chevalier is a vibrant community, and we’re pumped to add more choice for locals. We’ve been counting down the days, stocking shelves, training the team, practicing our processes and making sure everything’s ready behind the scenes. We can’t wait to welcome locals and start building connections in the community.”
Matthew has been in the grocery sector since his school days, managing stores in Christchurch and Wellington, including New World Railway Metro and New World Newlands, before moving with Nicole and their three young children to Auckland.
Chris Quin, Chief Executive of Foodstuffs North Island, says opening early has been a team effort.
“Our property, retail ops, merchandise and supply chain teams, as-well-as our contractors, have pulled out all the stops so we can open the doors early and support local customers sooner. As a family-owned co-operative, our grocers live and work in the communities they serve, and we’re committed to bringing customers great value, friendly service, and a shopping experience that reflects local needs.”
“New World Point Chevalier adds real choice and competition for shoppers in this part of Auckland. This is a significant investment in the area, and we’re looking forward to seeing the store become a key part of the neighbourhood for many years to come.”
The broader development includes 2,000m² of mixed-use office space above the supermarket and 147m² of additional retail space along Great North Road, which in the short term will be used to support online order collection for customers.
The opening of New World Point Chevalier isn’t just great news for shoppers, it’s also a win for the local economy, with 120 jobs created as part of the store’s launch.
“The response from job seekers has been incredible with thousands of people applying for roles,” said Matthew Mullins. “We’ve built a fantastic team that’s ready to deliver for the community.”
The store is open seven days a week from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week.
