6 October 2025

New World Broadway’s Rylan Brock has been named the Palmerston North Regional Checkout Operator of the Year, a signature Foodstuffs North Island competition celebrating checkout operators from across PAK’nSAVE, New World, Four Square, and Gilmours stores.

The competition is in its 77th year and recognises speed, accuracy, and exceptional customer service, with Rylan standing out from among 73 talented checkers from across the Palmerston North region.

Rylan started as a part-time checkout operator at New World Broadway over two years ago and was quickly promoted to a runner, responding to checkout calls, assisting supervisors and other operators, and helping new team members settle in.

Kate Goetzlof, checkout manager at New World Broadway, says: “Rylan stands out thanks to his positive attitude and infectious smile, bringing energy and enthusiasm to every shift. His humour, initiative, and commitment to great customer service make him a joy to work with and a real asset to the team.”

The store’s success didn’t stop there, with competitor Noah Tuthill placing fifth, and New World Broadway taking home the overall top scoring store award.

Store manager Liam Thompson said: “It’s honestly a huge deal for us, and we’re just so proud of Rylan and Noah. Having them win and place so well really reflects the strength of our team culture and the confidence built through training and experience - it’s a fantastic foundation for their future careers.”

Rylan says his favourite part of the job is the banter and positive atmosphere within the team.

“Providing consistent service and a great customer experience is not just about scanning items as quickly as possible. It’s about leaving the customer feeling respected and positive about the interaction,” he said.

Later this year, 10 regional winners - including Rylan - will be mystery shopped by an independent customer service expert who will assess them for customer engagement, checkout efficiency and their all-round customer service.

The overall Checkout Operator of the Year will be announced at the Foodstuffs North Island Excellence Awards in June 2026.
