Whare Whāngai, Nourished for Nil’s Social Supermarket in Hastings, opened in 2025, in partnership with Foodstuffs North Island. This is Nourished for Nil’s second Social Supermarket, complementing our Napier store which opened in 2023.
Nourished for Nil works with over 40 local social service agencies who can refer whānau in need to the Social Supermarket. Shoppers instore will find the food with a points value instead of dollars, where they pay a small amount and are allocated points to spend depending on the size of their family. We also include many zero-points items which the customer can select from to add to their overall shop.
The philosophy behind Social Supermarkets is to offer people in need the dignity of choice in the food they choose for their whānau. Our Social Supermarket offers a calm and welcoming environment where people are encouraged to take the time they need to select the food that is right for them.
People facing food insecurity in Hawke’s Bay are encouraged to contact an agency for a referral, from where they will also be able to access other social services. We work closely with Weave Hawke’s Bay who are a valued referral agency.
